日本單身女性中，有三分之一希望婚後留在家中當家庭主婦 ，不過男性中，每五人只有一人希望妻子婚後不外出工作。

中新網報導，日本衛生部對三千名年齡介於十五到三十九歲的年輕人展開調查，結果發現有34%的單身女性希望能在婚後成為家庭主婦。近39%的受訪者則表示，不希望成為家庭主婦。此外，19%的單身男性希望妻子能成為家庭主婦，持相反意見的則佔3成。

雖然現代日本女性教育水平提高，但不少婦女會在生育後離開工作崗位，回家當專職主婦。

日本專家曾指出，如果更多日本婦女重返職場，她們將能拯救日本長期疲軟的經濟。
